The NFL would not let LeBron James do this. Neither would the PGA Tour. Both leagues prohibit their athletes from partnering with prediction markets, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. The NBA has no such rule, which is how the most famous active player in American sport came to spend the first week of the NFL season as the face of Polymarket, a federally regulated exchange where users can trade contracts on the outcome of his own games.
LeBron has been a betting-market character before; we wrote in April about the night 15 experts picked Houston and LeBron disagreed. This is different. This is the player selling the market, in the same week that Novig, a rival sports-only exchange, put Sydney Sweeney in an ad wearing not much more than a hockey stick and drew public anger from Olympic champions. Two campaigns, two very different objections, and one question underneath both: who is allowed to sell you a bet, and on what?
What LeBron signed, as far as anyone knows
The teaser came first: a 14-second clip from LeBron on 5 September. The full campaign, "Polymarket HQ", launched on Tuesday 8 September as a 60-second spot set in a fictional office block where each floor is a market category, with Derek Jeter and Eli Manning as co-leads and Spike Lee, Sue Bird, Rajon Rondo, Reggie Bush, Richard Sherman, Alexandra Daddario, John Leguizamo and Craig Robinson on the sports floor (Northeast Times). Northeast Times calls it a "multimillion-dollar partnership push" and says the exact figure is undisclosed. Polymarket declined to give the Inquirer details, and Casino.org notes his previous DraftKings deal expired in the middle of the summer, so he went from sportsbook ambassador to exchange ambassador inside a single off-season.
The ad launched with a product, "Squads", private groups inside the app where friends chat, share positions and trade together. "With Squads, we're bringing the conversation and trading together so friends can follow the events they care about and make their predictions in one place," Polymarket chief growth officer Travis VanderZanden said (Casino.org). Commercially it worked: the spot passed 15.5 million views and Polymarket became the number one free finance app on the App Store on the day of launch, ahead of Kalshi, PayPal and Venmo, per iGaming Business.
The rulebook, league by league

Why ethicists and senators are in the story
Polymarket has insider-trading rules, and it distinguishes itself from sportsbooks on the grounds that there is no house setting odds; users trade with each other. The concern raised in the Inquirer is structural rather than about one player: active athletes hold information the market does not, and an active athlete endorsing the market where that information is priced puts a spotlight on it. Professor Melinda Roth of Washington and Lee University told the paper: "The timing really puts a spotlight on how prediction markets work, who is allowed to buy contracts." Democratic senators, in a letter to the CFTC quoted by the Inquirer, warned prediction markets "risk creating perverse incentives, undermining public trust and commodifying human suffering." Matt Yoder at Awful Announcing was blunter, calling the cast "a who's who of disappointing sellouts" and the markets "ripe for corruption and predatory behavior" (via Yahoo Sports).
Novig's ad, and the women who answered it
Novig's spot is about a minute long and has Sweeney repeat the word "sports" nine times while mock-playing tennis, golf, baseball and hockey in little more than the equipment, per ABC News. The message is that Novig is sports-only, unlike Kalshi and Polymarket. Sweeney is not a hired face: CEO Jacob Fortinsky told Front Office Sports she is an equity holder who "helped craft" the positioning, and more spots are coming. The reach was enormous: 11 million views on X, 40 million on Instagram, brand searches up 1,100% month on month.
Titmus is Australian, won four Olympic golds across Tokyo and Paris, and retired in October 2025 (Wikipedia). Swimmer Lani Pallister said she had "truly no words"; Hockeyroos goalkeeper Jocelyn Bartram called the ad "so out of touch" (ABC). Sweeney's response was a repost of images from ESPN's Body Issue, the magazine's series of nude athlete portraits. Novig did not answer Front Office Sports' request for comment about the athletes.
Eight days that explain the ad buys
That Sunday number is why the campaigns exist. Covers reports more than $3 billion in Week 1 prediction market volume overall, and H2 Gambling Capital, in a separate Covers report, projects the first year-on-year fall in NFL sportsbook handle since legalisation, 0.8%, with exchanges already taking the equivalent of 8 to 11% of book handle in competitive states.
What changes for a bettor at a licensed book
Three things. First, the athlete-endorsement question will not stay with LeBron; if the NBA does not write a rule, other players will follow the money, and the league has every reason to act before the CFTC does it for them. Second, the age gap is real: Kalshi and Polymarket accept customers at 18, while Novig chose 21, the same floor as licensed sportsbooks (FishDuck). Third, on price: a contract at $0.55 for "yes" is the same claim as a -122 (1.82) moneyline, and whether that beats a book's -110 (1.91), where 110 / 210 = 52.4% implied on each side and 52.4% + 52.4% = 104.8% adds up to a 4.5% hold, depends on the exchange's spread and fee that day. The ad will not tell you. The order book will.
